How to optimize yourGoogle Business Profile

The short answer

Pick the right primary category, list every service, keep your hours honest, add real job photos every month, get a review after every job, and use your real business name. Those six things do most of the work. Stuffing keywords into the name does the opposite and gets profiles suspended.

How to edit your Google Business Profile

Sign in to the Google account that manages the profile, then search your business name on Google or open it in Google Maps. The editing tools appear above your listing. Choose Edit profile to change details, and use the photo and post options for the rest.

Some edits, like the name, address or category, can trigger a review before they go live. Change them one at a time, and only when they're really changing.

1. Categories

Your primary category is the most important setting on the profile. It should match the job people search for most: Roofing contractor, Plumber, HVAC contractor, Electrician.

Add secondary categories only for real services (for example, Water heater installation service for a plumber who does a lot of them). Extra categories that don't match your work don't help.

2. Services and description

List every service you do, in the words customers use. This is the right place for keywords: "AC repair", "heat pump installation", "drain cleaning".

Write the description in plain sentences: what you do, where, and what makes you different. No links, no phone numbers, no keyword lists.

3. Hours, phone and contact options

Set hours to when someone really answers. Add special hours for holidays. If you run an after-hours line, say so in the description.

Most US profiles don't have a public email field. Customers reach you by phone, your website or a booking link, so make sure those work.

4. Photos

Add photos of real jobs, your crew and your trucks every month. Set a logo and a cover photo; Google may still choose which photo shows first in search.

To change your profile picture, open the photo options from your profile and set a new logo or cover photo. Stock photos don't help and can be removed.

5. Reviews and replies

Ask every customer for a review with a direct link, and reply to every review. No incentives and no filtering out unhappy customers. See review generation for how to set it up.

6. Posts and updates

Posts about recent jobs, seasonal services and offers show you're active. A couple a month is plenty. Use your own photos.

Why isn't my profile showing up?

  • Not verified yet, or verification is under review.
  • Suspended or limited. Check for a notice in your profile. See how reinstatement works.
  • Distance. You may show near your address but not across town. That's normal; city pages help.
  • Category mismatch. Your primary category doesn't match what's being searched.
  • Recent edits under review.

Optimization questions

How do I optimize my Google Business Profile?

Choose the right primary category, list every service, keep hours accurate, add real photos monthly, get reviews after every job and use your real business name.

How do I add keywords to my Google Business Profile?

In the services list and naturally in the description. Not in the business name; that breaks Google's guidelines.

How many categories should I choose?

One primary category that matches your main work, plus secondary categories only for services you really offer.

Can I add an email address to my profile?

Most US profiles don't have a public email field. Make sure your phone, website and any booking link work instead.

Is it worth paying someone to manage my profile?

If you don't have time to add photos, reply to reviews and report spam every month, yes. It's included in all our plans. See GBP management.
